Our Elderberries

Children take a conscious lead in their learning

Elderberries: 3 years to 5 years

Elderberries is a modern and spacious preschool with lots of natural light. Achieving the very best nursery experience for each child is at the forefront of our minds in all we do. This includes the planning of our environment, activities, equipment, toys and layout and is reflected in the variety and suitability of the provision in the Elderberries room. This enables us to create different and interesting spaces that change and grow with the needs and interests of our children.

The room also boasts its own large sensory room with sensory equipment specifically chosen for the benefit of preschool aged children. A fantastic facility to further enrich their experience in the preschool.

Because Mulberry Bush Nurseries are built to allow significantly more space per child than legislation requires even on the busiest days the Elderberries is always calm and organised.

Elderberries, the Early Years Foundation Stage and Preparation for School:

At the Mulberry Bush we believe in following children’s interests to inspire their learning. Working with the EYFS 7 areas of learning we ensure that all of our children are given a rich and varied learning environment to spark their imaginations and highly qualified and passionate practitioners to help support and extend this learning in whichever way they need.

At the end of their time in Elderberries the children will be moving on to school. We work extremely hard to ensure that each child is ready for this important next step. Please see our Transition to School section for further information.

Elderberries Outdoors:

There is direct access to the garden from the ground floor of the Elderberries room via 2 large sets of glass doors. This provides the children with plenty of free flow access to the extensive outdoor areas. The Elderberries have the advantage of a covered area adjacent to their room that enables easy indoor/outdoor play and enables us to flow both environments together seamlessly.

At the Mulberry Bush we encourage our children to spend lots of time outside and provide wet weather clothing to help make this as easy as possible no matter what the weather.

Elderberries and Meal Times:

The Elderberries have direct access to our kitchen, where they can see our cooks at work and regularly chat about what is being prepared that day. The children help to serve themselves at mealtimes and clear their own cutlery and plates. Meal times are a very sociable time with the children sitting in groups supported by an adult. Meal times are an excellent opportunity to expand children’s understanding of the natural world and the world around us. We talk to the children about what is in their food, how it is grown and where dishes originate from. Please see our Healthy Choices page for further information.
