The Mulberry Bush

At Locks Heath this week the Elderberries have been developing their team work skills. These activities have been planned to encourage the children too communicate together while both working towards the same goal. We have been completing obstacle courses while transporting water, being careful not to spill any, placed balloons between our's and a friend's head, trying not too drop the balloon, and finally a team game where we transport a ball on some guttering, being careful not to drop the ball out of the guttering. All of the preschoolers loved these activities activities and not only developed their communication towards each other, but also improved their spacial awareness, caring and consideration towards others and developed our friendships together. ...

The Mulberry Bush

Locks Heath
Raspberries have recently been making developments to their upstairs environment and their sensory room.
The children have loved using the sequin frames to make marks and explore the different textures on the wall.
They have also been showing lots of interest in dressing up and occupations which enabled us to change our role play area to include a Police and Fire station as well as a doctors surgery.
This links in with our British Values and has opened up lots of conversations about people who help us and what their role are within our communities.

Our Elderberries

Children take a conscious lead in their learning

Elderberries: 3 years to 5 years

Elderberries is a modern and spacious preschool with lots of natural light. It has recently benefited from a stunning 1st floor extension that has almost doubled the size of the room. The preschool also now has a new sensory room with projector, UV lighting and sparkly LED light wall, as well as a host of other sensory equipment. As each age group has the luxury of their own sensory room all content is specifically chosen for the benefit of those children. The additional space provided by the newly created first floor provides a unique facility in the area with nearly double the required space per child provided. This means that even on the busiest days the Elderberries room is never crowded or hectic.

The room offers fabulous and varied environment across two floors. This has enabled us to create different and interesting spaces that change and grow with the needs and interests of our children.

Elderberries, the Early Years Foundation Stage and Preparation for School:

At the Mulberry Bush we believe in following children’s interests to inspire their learning. Working with the EYFS 7 areas of learning we ensure that all of our children are given a rich and varied learning environment to spark their imaginations and highly qualified and passionate practitioners to help support and extend this learning in whichever way they need. For further information on the EYFS please see our Parent’s Guide to the EYFS.

At the end of their time in Elderberries the children will be moving on to school. We work extremely hard to ensure that each child is ready for this important next step. We are proud to say that our local schools have noted how well prepared for school Mulberry Bush children are and how successfully they make this transition. Please see our Transition to School section for further information.

Elderberries Outdoors:

There is direct access to the garden from the ground floor of the Elderberries room via large French Windows. This provides the children with plenty of free flow access to the outdoor areas. Our indoor/outdoor classroom has been designed with full length folding doors.
At the Mulberry Bush we encourage our children to spend lots of time outside and provide wet weather clothing to help make this as easy as possible no matter what the weather.

Please see the Our Spaces section for more information on our garden facilities

Elderberries and Meal Times:

The Elderberries have direct access to our kitchen, where they can see our cooks at work and regularly chat about what is being prepared that day. The children help to serve themselves at mealtimes and clear their own cutlery and plates. Meal times are a very sociable time with the children sitting in groups supported by an adult. Meal times are an excellent opportunity to expand children’s understanding of the natural world and the world around us. We talk to the children about what is in their food, how it is grown and where dishes originate from. Please see our Healthy Choices page for further information.
