Monkey Music at the Mulberry Bush

May 25, 2018 10:45 am

Paula from Monkey Music Winchester has been holding sessions at the Mulberry Bush in Locks Heath for approximately 8 months working with children of all ages. They absolutely love their sessions and Paula does a brilliant job of tailoring activities perfectly for each age group.

As well as being wonderfully good fun the children learn valuable skills in their Monkey Music sessions. Even the very youngest children are captivated by the musical experience. I recently sat in on a session with the babies and they were enthralled, sitting so quietly watching and listening as Paula demonstrated a number of instruments. To start with the children learn about rhythm and different sounds. They listen to lots of music, some pieces that are calming and peaceful and some that are exciting and enlivening. The sessions are very proactive and the children sing and dance and make music of their own throughout. They all learn the ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ songs and join in with enthusiasm. Along with this they practice turn taking and listening to instructions which are of course such important skills for life especially as they move towards school.

The Elderberries (Preschool) are learning about different types of instruments; brass, woodwind, strings and percussion. They work on rhythm and talk about how different music makes them feel. They are also starting to learn about different musical terms and are doing very well with Piano (quietly). The children have such a great time singing and dancing and being empowered to use their instruments in different ways. It is lovely to see them having such fun and learning at the same time.
